Episode Seven, FHIR for Imaging AI: What HL7 v2 Couldn’t Deliver, features Herman Oosterwijk, a leading expert on DICOM, FHIR, and imaging AI. In Episode Seven, Vega Imaging Informatics President and CEO, Luke Bideaux, and Herman Oosterwijk discuss the future of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), including its advantages and disadvantages, the need for imaging informatics professionals to become trained in this area and ready for implementation of modern AI-powered systems, and learning resources.
FHIR is an HL7 international standard for electronically exchanging health information, using modern web-based technologies like APIs and REST to allow different healthcare systems to communicate and share patient data in a consistent, secure, and real-time manner. It standardizes the format of health data, such as patient information, medications, and encounters, making it easier to integrate into applications and create a more connected and efficient healthcare ecosystem. Despite its benefits, FHIR is still not widely adopted in the United States. However, future information systems, such as cutting-edge AI-powered systems, will be based on FHIR, making the need for training in this area in the imaging informatics field crucial.
Herman discusses how the FHIR Conformance Declaration allows information systems to dynamically achieve interoperability by requiring each system to provide a structured resource that describes what it supports. This FHIR requirement opens the door for a level of integration automation that was not possible in HL7 v2.
